In my work I am exploring what it feels like to be human and to have complex drives and emotions. These sculptures arise out of my own subconscious direction and also relate to universal human truths and experiences.
The Rocking-Horse Riders have rocked themselves to the absolute limit of their rockers, to the point when they will either rock back downwards, or tip over completely, either forwards or backwards. The first one and the last one in particular are right at that point. They are either enthusiastically reaching the limit of what can be achieved, or recklessly not paying attention to the danger.
There is also some irony to this series, because however hard they rock, the riders will, of course, be staying in the same place, including the one out in front, who thinks he has won. The series is designed to be shown one behind the other in a line going in the same direction, but they can be seen singly as well.
I model these sculptures in wax-based materials and then cast them into bronze or resin.
