The emphasis of these classes is to enable you express yourself by supporting both technical knowledge and creative freedom.

I find it more useful to encourage continuous trial and discovery, rather than to be fixated on perfecting one particular piece – the most successful artworks seem to happen by a process of working with as much integrity as possible, whilst letting go of the outcomes!

These classes are for everyone – no previous experience is necessary, although experienced artists would also enjoy them.  Everyone can work at their own pace and on their own projects.  Principal drawing materials and paper will be provided, but you may want to bring your own if you have some that you like to use.  There will be somewhere to leave your work between classes, if you would like to.  We will not be using very messy materials, but you may want to wear old clothes or an apron.  It may be useful to bring a phone or tablet to look up any reference material that you might want.  There is free WiFi at The Hive.

The courses are 5, 6 or 7 weeks long, dependant on B&NES academic term lengths.  They run from 1 to 3pm, and we will stop for a refreshment break from The Swallow Café half-way through.

This course will follow Government Covid-Secure Guidelines, in order to comply, behave responsibly, and have everyone feel secure.  As a result, for the time being, participants will be asked to maintain social distancing and wear a face covering at all times when in the building.  Please do not attend the class if you have any Covid symptoms, and please let us know if you subsequently test positive, having attended a class.  We will update this guidance as the Government advice changes.

Drawing classes for all!

Lively, encouraging art classes to refresh your drawing practice.  How to connect with your passion and enthusiasm and bring them into your artwork.  Drawing for its own sake, as a tool for observation and development, or to facilitate further projects, such as painting or sculpture.

We will cover a variety of introductory projects and approaches to working, guided by what the group feels would be most useful and relevant to you.

I would like to encourage expansive practice that supports freedom of mark-making and thinking, so we might start with doing quick, large-scale drawing in order to gain an approach to then take into smaller or more detailed work.

Topics that we might cover include:

Large line drawings of small objects.  Quick impressions using marker-pen so that each line is permanent, but each drawing is transitory, to allow freedom of thought and movement.

Large charcoal drawings of contrasting subjects to practice encapsulating drama, and using the putty-rubber to draw with white space as much as with the dark line.

Pencil studies, thinking about proportionality and perspective.

Life studies from a sitter.

Drawing dynamic buildings.

Line and wash.

Imaginative drawing – creating your own subject matter.

Group projects – working together.

Less usual media.

Other projects that you would specifically like to try or have support with.
